Black brick formats — engobe, coal-fired and wirecut

Black is achieved differently depending on the product — and the difference is visible on the wall. The Paris Black uses a full-cover black engobe for deep, consistent colour across the face. The Berlin Black achieves its tone through coal added during firing, creating subtle variation and warmth within the black that engobed bricks don't have. The Cresswell Black (Unika series) is produced using wind turbine electricity and biogas — the sustainable black option. For wirecut black, the Black Wirecut (RT601) and Black Glaze Wirecut (RT602) deliver clean-cut edges and a more uniform, controlled black suited to contemporary schemes where surface variation is not the priority.

Charcoal bricks — between black and grey

For projects where true black reads too stark against the surrounding context, charcoal sits in the spectrum between dark grey and black — giving depth and drama without the full contrast of a pure black façade. UK Brick's Charcoal Multi (RT551) delivers a waterstruck face in deep charcoal and black multi tones with natural variation across the elevation. The Charcoal FF Format (RT551-FF) offers the same colourway in a long-format Flemish profile — suited to schemes requiring the charcoal tone with a more contemporary horizontal emphasis. Both sit within the black range at UK Brick and are available with samples on request.

    FAQs

    Are black bricks more expensive?

Sometimes, but not always. At UK Brick, price is usually driven more by the brick range, format (standard vs linear), and manufacturing/finish (e.g., waterstruck texture, engobe finish, specialist firing) than colour alone. The most accurate way to compare is to shortlist the exact black bricks you want and price them against your quantity and delivery postcode.

    What are black bricks?

Black bricks are clay facing bricks specified for a deep, dark finish—often used on modern homes, extensions and feature elevations. UK Brick supplies black bricks in different styles, including waterstruck (more texture/character) and wirecut/linear options (cleaner, sharper lines).

Are all bricks in the UK red?

No. While red brick is common in the UK, there are many other brick colours depending on local clay, manufacturing, and architectural preferences—such as buff, brown, black, grey, white and green. UK Brick supplies multiple colour families because different projects need different tones, textures and levels of variation.

    What makes a brick black?

Different products achieve “black” in different ways. At UK Brick, black can be created through special firing methods (including processes that deepen the body tone) and/or surface finishes such as a black engobe (a mineral slip/finish) used to produce a strong, consistent dark appearance. The exact method depends on the brick range and the finish you’re specifying.

Are black bricks actually black or more like charcoal?

Both exist. UK Brick’s black ranges include options that read as true deep black and others that sit closer to charcoal/grey-black, often with subtle tonal movement. The best way to confirm is to order samples and view them outdoors, because light and texture change how “black” the wall reads.
